Today, we went to
the Kente Village of Adanwomase. We were well received, and
experienced a wonderful tour of their village. They gave us a brief
history of kente's rich background in Ghana, and a few demonstrations
of processes in order to start a weave. Then we toured their
workshops where there were many looms, and men working. They were so
fast, and the sound of the shuttles was entrancing. Our guides
Raphael and Eric taught us how to properly wear the kente cloth as
Kayla and Aaron modeled.
After lunch we
travelled a short distance to an adinkra workshop where David, the
adinkra master, showed us how to make ink, stamps, and how to
properly apply ink to the fabric. Everyone got to make their own
stamped cloth. Adinkra cloth is commonly worn for funerals and is red
and black in color, while kente cloth is worn for large celebrations
and is often white, blue, or gold. The workshop was very informative
and gave everyone a rich appreciation for the art.
For dinner we got
treated to an American restaurant, called Big Daddy's. We all got
hamburgers and french fries and gorged ourselves on a little slice of
home. Now, everyone is discussing the foods that they want when we
get home, we are half way through our trip!
