The group had a late
start today after our New Years festivities last night. We spent the
day working on various crafts at the Our Talking Hands site:
Chris showed us his
process for making wallets out of water sachet bags they use here; we
found out how to weave kente with a few of Scotts students from the
deaf school; Nicole spent the day with two of Scotts guys working on
improving their chicken coops; Nikolai improved the plastic button
designs from our class for further use; Sarah and Kayla made hair
accessories out of batik fabric and kente; and the rest of us worked
on kente shirt designs, coloring adult coloring books, and playing
with Stephanie (Scott's daughter) and Bless (the four year old who
may as well be Scotts son).
Today we had our
meals catered by Theresa, an ISU graduate with some serious talent
with mashed potatoes. We're a little bummed she wasn't a part of our
trip the entire time! We'll be back to Ghanaian “chop” for the
rest of our time here, so we are soaking up all.
Overall it was a
pretty relaxed day working with those involved at our talking hands,
which will hopefully turn into a partnership after returning to the
states.
